Recent discussion
regarding a second road bridge across the Forth could
have a rival and consigned to the dustbin if a proposal
by a leading academic at Napier University gets the
green light.
New Ferry Service
The
plan involves high-tech ferry services and new terminals
at key locations on the north and south banks of the
River Forth.
Bo'ness could be in the frame
With Bo'ness poised for regeneration
focussing around the foreshore and harbour/ docks,
the proposals could complement the development and
put Bo'ness in the frame as a base for a ferry commuter
service.
Although the idea is little
more than an academic exercise there is said to be
some interest in the possibility.
Interest already being shown
Fife Council has expressed
interest in a ferry service with links to Edinburgh
and is said to have support from both bus and rail
operator Stagecoach and from Southamton based ferry
service operator Red Funnel Group.
The plan may need substantial
civil engineering works at some of the possible ferry
locations but it is believed could be operational
within three years.
Support of Forth Estuary Forum
The
Forth Estuary Forum think the scheme has potential
and are keen to stimulate further debate as it could
offer al less controversial solution than a new road
crossing and in a shorter timescale.
A study is underway and is
expected to be completed by summer 2006.
